The Inevitable Rise

The site for my final design project in my undergraduate course is located in Camden Town, a borough in London. The dimensions of the site are approximately 4500m². This is a residential thesis project, that will result in the form of a floating community. Through my final thesis project, I am speculating a scenario in which the climate crisis has escalated out of control, resulting in extreme sea level rise to the point where Camden is underwater. The site, like much of Camden sits at 30m above sea level, which I calculated to become underwater by 2200 if sea level rise follows an extreme course, therefore deciding the date and setting of my thesis. The fluid and sinuous community of apartments living spaces will float at the surface of the water, tethered in position vertically, and resting on the water through the floating concrete hull.

The main focus behind design was to create a community that can thrive and sustain itself as an independent unit, without the luxury of traditional access to delivery and transportation as it was prior to sea level rise. The floating community is a living form, centred around the climate controlled garden space utilising natural plant based food production and vertical farms. An ETFE based skylight helps to maintain the conditions within the open flowing space. Deliveries come in the form of remote controlled drones that bring supplies that cannot be grown in the farm spaces, and access is gained through the docking area, where boats can be parked up.
The thesis seeks to be a trendsetter and benchmark, in a landscape that was unprepared for the extreme levels of water rise. The community shows that life can go on.
